Still playing catch up on records & pics from day five in Peru but 15 lifers did not include the Inambari-Tambopata Antwren that remains an undescribed form so in numeric flux. Excellent views of four individuals. 😀

Just back from a quick trip to Sumatra (Indonesia) where we enjoyed the delights of Mount Kerinci; birding at various elevations. Amongst the highlights: we eventually located this day roosting Sumatran Frogmouth.

This Eared Pitta in Khao Yai NP, Thailand was the crowning glory of a birding lifetime. Where do I go from here........

@ClevedonMoths Probably would agree with all of the lumps, it reminds me of my days in the office. Someone had to reinvent the wheel every 4 years to justify their existence. I'm not qualified to know what a species should be but at least proposals should be peer reviewed, IOC a free-for-all 🤷

@roxby_malcolm 135 lumps. All of them? 😀 Not qualified to say personally. I suspect speciation is studied more in some regions than others & taxonomy pushed more rigorously in some than others. I doubt that there is that much consistency in reality & some relatively clear species await study.

In 19 hours, the taxonomic consolidation will be public at avilist.org at 5.00pm BST on 10th June. So here are the Maghreb Tawny Owl race, the yellow-billed Black Kite race, the grey-headed Purple Swamphen race & the Mediterranean Spotted Flycatcher race maybe..... 😊

By the time I got to Bunbeg, Donegal, I had no nails left! 😂 thankfully, this Bee-eater did the decent thing and hung around for me. An extremely difficult species to catch up with in Ireland. @BirdGuides

Hearing about a Bonaparte's Gull on the mere was a big local miss for me, but I think this male Temminck's Tragopan made up for it at Mandala, Arunachal Pradesh yesterday

After a rather prolonged & unplanned full board holiday courtesy of the NHS, I'm now back home. I'm facing a rather long term recuperation & unable to leave the house for a while. Still some time before I'm out & about birding but its a start

When I'm away working & get bored, I'll often disappear down some wormhole or other, birds mainly (maybe music). That's happened last week as I decided to work out (some of) the rare birds I've only seen once & how many years have elapsed since that one sighting... Long🧵1/16

@GavinMaclean3 Hi Gavin, it's a well known spot. A small municipal park north of Phuket in Thailand, easily found on ebird👍

Back home from a successful mop up trip to Thailand, Malaysia, Sabah and Cambodia. A couple of highlights, Spotted Wood Owl, White Fronted Scops Owl and Nicobar Pigeon. 2 Barn Swallows at my local patch, Castle Lake this PM. Spring!

@Vaasetter What a bird and what a twitch, Dawn and I were only talking about this the other day. Still the best bird I've ever seen in Britain. I know what's on the British list and what I may see in the future but this will never be beaten❤️

To see this extraordinary speices whizz right over our heads & for a good while too (until the infamous Peregrine attempted strike on it) will remain a timeless twitching memory. The bird was so close, we had to duck (BRF landing on his backside to avoid a collision!). 10/16

There were only ever 2 new birds available for me in Khao Yai and today, day 8 I finally saw the last one, Coral Billed Ground Cuckoo. No photo so here's a funky Gibon to cheer your weekend 👍

After 5 days of searching in Khao Yai I was convinced I wouldn't see an Eared Pitta this afternoon so left my camera in the car. This headless wonder was taken with Dawn's pocket camera! A week of numbers, 50 ticks on this catch up trip, Pitta no 32 and my 60th birthday, Crikey!

One day you're up the next you're down. Quite literally in my case as I stood on a piece of wood which shattered and plunged me 3 metres down a vertical drain, fortunately not any deeper or filled with water, Cuts, bruises but all good. elephant wandered into camp to cheer me up
