I might be reaching, but stay with me now… I think the situation between Rin and Sae is such a good example of why communication is, truly, the key to maintaining healthy relationships between friends, partners, siblings, etc.
At its core, Rin builds his entire identity around Sae (admiration, rivalry, purpose) without ever actually checking in on how Sae feels or what he went through. Meanwhile, Sae comes back from Spain having experienced failure, pressure, and a complete shift in perspective (which I am SO excited to read more about in the future, perhaps during the game against Spain), but instead of explaining that vulnerability, he shuts Rin out and delivers everything in a cold, almost dismissive way. So instead of a conversation, we get a collision of assumptions of both their assumptions, where: Rin interprets Sae’s distance as betrayal, while Sae treats Rin like someone who “wouldn’t understand anyway.”
In my humble opinion, Rin communicates through obsession and performance, while Sae communicates through detachment and harsh realism. Without that mutual effort to bridge the gap, their relationship turns into resentment in a way (although, it’s more so for Rin because Sae does not know how much this has affected Rin).
It’s also a good example of how unspoken expectations can be just as damaging as the actual conflict itself. Rin expected Sae to remain his ideal partner in a shared dream, while Sae expected Rin to evolve independently and face reality (one that he would not have been able to face given the fact that he stayed back in Japan). Neither of those expectations were ever clearly expressed, given the fact that they were just merely children, so when their reality didn’t match up for them once they confronted each other again, it felt like a personal betrayal on both sides.
Anyways, that’s just me connecting this to real life, and writing about their dynamic from how I interpreted it. I’d love to read everyone’s opinions/interpretations as well (if you stuck around this long haha) and want to enlighten me on a different take!! Sorry haha :>
