Wat mij steeds meer tegenstaat, is hoe symboliek wordt verkocht als opoffering. Prinses Amalia rondt een militaire basisopleiding van twee weken af en wordt bevorderd tot korporaal. Vervolgens wordt dit gepresenteerd alsof ze “haar steentje bijdraagt” aan Defensie. Met camera’s, trots filmende ouders en een PR-verhaal dat geen enkele relatie heeft met de realiteit van de gemiddelde militair. Laten we even eerlijk zijn. De gemiddelde militair: - kiest niet voor Defensie als leerwerktraject naast een studie rechten - heeft geen vangnet van paleizen, adviseurs en levenslange zekerheid - wordt niet beschermd door afkomst, status of politieke immuniteit - weet wél wat het is om te vechten voor bestaansrecht, inkomen en toekomst Een korte opleiding volgen binnen een volledig gecontroleerde, veilige en symbolische context is geen equivalent van dienstbaarheid. Het is al helemaal geen “ervaring” die je kunt vergelijken met mensen die jarenlang hun lichaam, mentale gezondheid en privéleven opofferen, vaak zonder applaus. Alsof zij ooit naar het front gaat, alsof zij ooit echte consequenties draagt, alsof zij ooit écht risico loopt. Dit is geen aanval op haar als persoon, maar wel op het narratief. Het verheerlijken van privilege als moed is een belediging voor iedereen die geen keuze heeft. Echte dienstbaarheid vraagt geen camera. Echte opoffering heeft geen gouden lepel. En echte militairen hebben geen PR-afdeling nodig om serieus genomen te worden.

Milton Friedman had gelijk. En dat is precies het probleem. Sommige denkers worden bewonderd. Anderen worden geciteerd. En dan heb je Milton Friedman: een econoom die vooral wordt genegeerd — juist omdat hij zo pijnlijk vaak gelijk had. Friedman was geen ideoloog, geen revolutionair met een rode vlag, maar een nuchtere man met een simpele vraag: wat gebeurt er écht als mensen vrij zijn om keuzes te maken? Die vraag bracht hem tot inzichten die tot op de dag van vandaag politiek onwelkom zijn. Neem vraag en aanbod. Voor Friedman was dat geen abstract model uit een leerboek, maar de basiswet van menselijk gedrag. Als iets schaars is en je de prijs kunstmatig laag houdt, krijg je tekorten. Als je iets overvloedig maakt en de prijs dwingt omhoog, krijg je overschotten. Het klinkt banaal — en precies daarom wordt het zo vaak genegeerd. Overheden blijven doen alsof woningnood, zorgtekorten en personeelsschaarste natuurverschijnselen zijn, terwijl ze in werkelijkheid het voorspelbare gevolg zijn van beleid dat de prijssignalen heeft gesaboteerd. Dan inflatie. Friedmans beroemdste uitspraak — “inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon” — wordt nog steeds als ketterij behandeld in beleidskringen. Politici wijzen liever naar oorlogen, supermarkten, energiebedrijven of “graaiflatie”. Maar Friedman wees consequent naar de bron: te veel geld, gecreëerd door centrale banken, gedekt door politieke lafheid. Inflatie is geen toeval. Het is een beleidskeuze. En vooral een stille belasting op spaarders, gepensioneerden en mensen zonder toegang tot hard assets. En dan de waanzin van het minimumloon. Friedman werd hierom verguisd, vooral omdat zijn analyse moreel ongemakkelijk is. Een minimumloon helpt niet de armsten; het sluit hen juist uit. Wie minder productief is dan het wettelijk minimum, wordt simpelweg niet aangenomen. Het resultaat? Meer jeugdwerkloosheid, meer informele arbeid en minder opstapmogelijkheden. Dat is geen ideologisch standpunt, maar een empirische observatie — keer op keer bevestigd, keer op keer genegeerd. Wat Friedman onderscheidde, was zijn morele helderheid. Hij geloofde niet dat de staat slimmer is dan miljoenen individuen samen. Hij geloofde ook niet dat goede bedoelingen slechte uitkomsten rechtvaardigen. Integendeel: beleid moet worden beoordeeld op wat het doet, niet op wat het bedoelt. Misschien is dat de reden waarom Friedman vandaag zo weinig wordt gelezen in Den Haag, Brussel of Davos. Zijn ideeën zijn lastig, omdat ze verantwoordelijkheid terugleggen bij individuen en omdat ze de illusie doorprikken dat complexiteit een excuus is voor falen. Milton Friedman is niet achterhaald. Hij is simpelweg te confronterend. En zolang dat zo blijft, zullen we blijven doen alsof economische wetten optioneel zijn — met voorspelbare gevolgen. Dr Gert Jan Mulder
