@sweetLouieBello I’m not sure. I’m thinking that maybe we pinch ran or pinch hit for the catcher and it got recorded that way—that we were listed as catcher until we took the field. Or maybe the game ended before we got to the field. Really don’t know

Played for Billy Martin twice. All the chaos not notwithstanding, he was great mgr. Played a half a season for Tony LaRussa. Great mgr, probably top 5 all time. But if the criteria is genius level baseball mind it’s Mauch hands down for me

@roysmalley5 I was a young sportswriter in the ‘70s, and am eternally grateful for all the things I learned from Gene, who took the time to explain many things to me. Later, when I became an umpire, I wore #4 in his memory.

A few, yes. Gene believed most pitchers pitched differently (worse) with runners into scoring position. Another outcome: after all those bunts from me early in the year it was amazing how many first pitch fastballs I got—and hit out of the ballpark. Gene originated 3d chess

Unlikely to see this again either: in 1978 Gene had me hitting 2nd in front of Carew most of the time. So, naturally he had me bunting runners into scoring position for Rodney. I had 20-some sac’s and 19 HR’s that yr. Led the club in both HR’s and sac bunts
