new au idea where shane and ilya go to the same university but they absolutely cannot stand each other. ilya is the hockey captain, popular, loud, always surrounded, exactly the kind of guy shane avoids on purpose. shane is the quiet smart one with perfect notes, no patience and an anxiety problem he hides until he can’t. they end up in the same class and the same group project, and it is awful. shane thinks ilya is arrogant and careless. ilya thinks shane is uptight and impossible, every conversation turns into an argument. then one day after some huge campus event, everything gets too loud. too many people, too much yelling, too much movement, too much noise at once, and shane panics. he locks himself in a bathroom stall just to breathe. and that’s when he sees it. a message written on the door in an alphabet he doesn’t understand. cyrillic, probably. but the weird thing is it isn’t some old graffiti the ink is fresh. still a little glossy written by hand, with today’s date and a time next to it. 4:12pm which means someone wrote it today, minutes ago shane translates it because focusing on that is easier than focusing on his shaking hands. the message says: if you took the time to translate this you’re not as boring as you look. library bench. 6pm. and shane knows this is insane. but it worked. he’s calmer. curious and annoyed that he’s curious so at 6pm, he goes. under the bench, there’s a folded note taped where nobody would ever look. congratulations. you’re the first and only person who found this. either you’re curious, desperate or both. now prove you were paying attention. beneath that, there’s a sentence with random numbers hidden between the letters. shane spends ten minutes staring at it before realizing the numbers make a phone number. so he texts it. the reply comes almost immediately. took you long enough and that’s how shane starts texting a stranger somewhere on campus. someone annoying, funny, sharp, and weirdly good at distracting him when his brain gets too loud. the whole time, shane has no idea it’s ilya. because in no universe would ilya rozanov, loud arrogant hockey captain ilya rozanov, be the person leaving fresh ink messages in bathroom stalls and secret notes under library benches. and ilya has no idea it’s shane either. so in real life they keep snapping at each other in class, ruining their group project, and acting like being in the same room is torture. then they go home and text each other like they’re the only person on campus who knows how to listen.
