A doctor has been serving one of Baltimore’s poorest neighborhoods for decades — and if his patients can’t pay, that’s OK with him. So when he was diagnosed with cancer, his community rallied to raise $100,000 for his treatments. cbsnews.com/news/beloved-b…

Good read on why #RoadSafety is a key public health, economic development issue that policymakers across Africa must address. Motorcycle delivery platforms also play an important role in making sure their staff have access to safe, certified helmets.
UN Environment Programme@UNEP

Africa is the most affected by road crashes, with a traffic fatality rate of 19.5 deaths per 100,000 people compared to other parts of the world. See @AfricaRenewal info on how African countries can reduce this number and achieve road safety targets. un.org/africarenewal/…

Safer roads for all + effective policies ensure that young people and communities thrive and can support local economies. In Uganda, we work with @ROSACU to elevate road safety on the national agenda + advance lifesaving policies. #ATF2024 #RoadSafety

This beautifully written piece by @rgay covers the long history of racist, anti-Haitian rhetoric in the U.S. The Haitian revolution, the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and the disparate treatment of #Haitian immigrants from both sides of the aisle are all interconnected.
Amy Wilentz@amywilentz

Pitch perfect piece by ⁦@rgay⁩ on the recent hideous and baseless claims about Haitian immigrants. Cover the whole damn thing: The Haitian Question | The New Yorker newyorker.com/news/the-lede/…

Thanks for sharing your insights from the @AfDB_Group Transport Forum. Road crashes are the leading cause of death for children + youth. We all have a role to play to reverse this trend. Road safety saves lives & accelerates inclusive economic growth across Africa. #ATF2024

Thanks for shining a spotlight on the many contributions of #Haitians to the civil rights movement. The wise words of Desdunes still ring true today: "It is more noble and dignified to fight, no matter what, than to show a passive attitude of resignation."
GullahMuseumSC@GullahSc

Ever hear of Rodolphe Lucien Desdunes? A prominent Haitian editor, author, and civil rights activist from New Orleans, he is best known for his work in the Plessy v. Ferguson trial, he combated laws segregating blacks and whites in public spaces. haiti.org/dt_team/rodolp…

Today my thoughts are of Captain Alix Idrache, a US Army helicopter pilot, who graduated at the top of his West Point class with a degree in physics in 2016. He's also a Haitian immigrant.

Haitian solders risked & gave their lives fighting alongside the Patriots during the American Revolution in 1779. This monument in downtown Savannah honors their service. Several who served in the American war for independence would later fight in the war for Haitian independence

In the early days of the Aids epidemic, Haitians were vilified, scapegoated & stigmatized. And the list goes on... Break the cycle. Stand with #Haitians

When #Haitians fought off the shackles of slavery & established the first black independent republic in the Western Hemisphere they were demonized, dehumanized & debased.

As a Haitian American, this is infuriating. Let's speak out about the long history of anti-Haitian propaganda & racist rhetoric towards #Haitians. We've seen this playbook before.

And let's not forget about the infamous 4 H's and the racism Haitians faced during the early days of the Aids epidemic. This vile from the Trump campaign has deep historical roots.

Anti Haitian sentiment is not new. This is history repeating itself. When Haiti became the first black republic in the Western Hemisphere, the U.S., France & other colonial powers spouted similar propaganda, racist rhetoric about Haitians we're hearing now.
Patrick Gaspard@patrickgaspard

This vile charge by Vance about Haitians eating family pets has of course been debunked But this is exactly why Trump choose this malignancy as his running mate. The racism and cruelty are the only points. We have to organize to beat them. All our outrage won’t mean a damn thing

Haitian minorities in Ohio are experiencing an alarming rise in threats and harassment. This escalation, fueled by far-right rhetoric and seen here on X, demands urgent attention. Both the Haitian community and political leaders must come together to address this growing hostility and ensure the safety of Haitians everywhere. Stronger advocacy and swift action are crucial to protect Haitian lives, not only in Ohio but across the world.
