Happy Birthday Jean-Jacques Dessalines 🎊 🇭🇹 Jean-Jacques Dessalines, a towering figure of the Haitian Revolution, is honored as one of the founding fathers of Haiti and a symbol of resilience. After Toussaint Louverture was captured in 1802, Dessalines took command of the revolutionary forces. His leadership led to the defeat of Napoleon’s troops in the decisive Battle of Vertières in 1803. On January 1, 1804, Dessalines declared Haiti the first independent Black republic, breaking the chains of colonialism and slavery. Later that year, Dessalines proclaimed himself Emperor Jacques I, ruling under the constitution of 1805. His reign laid the foundation for Haiti’s sovereignty, though his leadership style was marked by his strong stance on protecting Haitian independence. Dessalines’ legacy is immense—he was a fierce advocate for the complete abolition of slavery and sought to empower the formerly enslaved people of Haiti. To Haitians, Dessalines represents freedom, courage, and the unyielding spirit of independence. His declaration of “Liberty or Death” still echoes in the collective memory, reminding the world that Haiti’s fight was not just for national independence but for the dignity of all oppressed people.

Haitian solders risked & gave their lives fighting alongside the Patriots during the American Revolution in 1779. This monument in downtown Savannah honors their service. Several who served in the American war for independence would later fight in the war for Haitian independence

Anti Haitian sentiment is not new. This is history repeating itself. When Haiti became the first black republic in the Western Hemisphere, the U.S., France & other colonial powers spouted similar propaganda, racist rhetoric about Haitians we're hearing now.
