You guys know I worked for Orkin for 20 yrs in various executive roles. I got my little brother a job there too after he got his MBA. He ran a branch about 6 yrs, learned the biz, left & started his own pest company from scratch 3 yrs ago. He literally started knocking on doors in newly built neighborhoods offering pest control. He’ll do $1 million this yr in revenue at 35% margin. He just hired his 4th full time employee. His goal next year is to hit $2 million. His goal by 2035 is to be at $5 million via organic growth alone…then “maybe” sell the company. Large companies like $ROL and $RTO will often pay $2-$4 dollars per dollar of REVENUE (not per dollar of profit, but revenue) to acquire small mom and pop pest control companies (generally $10 million and under are considered small). The amount of millionaires that the pest control industry has created would blow your mind. As the Chairman of our company, Mr. Rollins, would often say “We may not be recession proof, but we damn sure are recession resistant” The main thing the big boys look at when acquiring a smaller pest control company is the recurring monthly, bi monthly and quarterly pest control customers. It’s massive cash flow right off the bat and the big boys know they can take those basic pest customers that have that single service and sell a ton of other services (the trust is there as an existing customer) like termite work, crawl space encapsulation, attic insulation removal and replacement, etc. The bug biz is a VERY lucrative business.

I went to pick up a tapestry from marketplace and when I got there the guy asked if I wanted to come in and look at more things and take whatever I wanted before the estate sale and the house felt like looking 50 years into my future I spent two hours there and got so many things

When I was a child we had neighbors whose daughter was a good few years older than me. Old enough to be dating. And her boyfriend would come by and they would spend entire afternoons talking, her at the window, him standing outside it, for hours, just talking, laughing, knowing. I could see them from my bedroom window, and I remember it vividly, it stuck with me for some reason, but my parents thought this was hilarious, “how old fashioned, how unnecessary, what a strange thing to make the poor boy stand there like that”, they would exclaim. But my parents were wrong, and the neighbors, turns out, were right. That girl married that boy. They are still together. Living right next door to that house where they spend hours knowing each other. I, on the other hand, was raised with considerably more modern sensibilities and considerably less supervision, went on to collect a long list of broken hearts. There is something almost unbearably sad about that when I sit with it. The wisdom was right there. Literally next door, an arms reach away, and my parents were too busy laughing at it to ever try and understand it. The neighbors weren’t punishing that boy, they instead were protecting the most important thing in that house — their daughter.

I don’t eat at Steak ‘n Shake very often (their transparency and ownership have always been a little weird to me), but a new controversy I just read about is pretty silly. During remodels, they may add a QR code scanner for soft drink refills. Basically, you scan proof of purchase so people can’t just order water and then help themselves to unlimited soda. Some folks are now boycotting because they have to scan their receipt each time. I think it’s a smart move that helps keep people honest. The entitlement is wild, people are genuinely mad about scanning a code for a free refill? Go to almost any other country where free refills barely exist (if at all) and they’d be begging for this system. 😂🥤

Should I sell on depop? I haven’t sold stuff online since pre 2020 and it was kids clothes in fb groups. Sometimes I find the cutest vintage items when I thrift that won’t fit me but it kills me to leave them behind,
