Over the last few months I’ve been working to create a project that puts boxes of wildlife goodies free into new build homes, to encourage people to make their new gardens attractive to wildlife. it’s called Nature Box and the first ones head out very soon. #rewilding

A LOT of frog spawn in a little naturalistic wetland next to a relatively new housing development in #Cambridge. Housing & Nature next to one another - no problem. Blending this kind of habitat into new housing is not that complicated (& the wetland helps reduce flood risk).

For various boring reasons we have to say that these are Hugh Grant’s views not ours, and that we definitely haven’t printed his post out and put it in a little frame on our desk

Dirty Business on @Channel4. Brilliantly made, devastating. Water must be nationalised now. The owners of the private water companies jailed.

Unhappy with your bank, phone provider, or electricity supplier? Switch. Unhappy with your water company? Tough. No competition. No price control. No opt out. A state-protected cartel profiteering from ecological ruin with total impunity. #DirtyBusiness

"Dirty Business creator on raw sewage scandal: ‘This is the worst possible situation we’ll accept without starting a revolution’." Maybe that's what it's going to take. One way or another govt is going to have to take its head out of the toilet and confront the ownership and financing of the water industry. There is no other option. independent.co.uk/arts-entertain…

Bucket: £10 Waders: £30 Measuring jug: 90p Ammonia tester: £100 Actually going out to check a sewage outfall that illegally discharges 750,000,000 million litres of sewage every year? Priceless. There are some things a government regulator with a budget of £189,000,000 & 12,000 staff can’t do. For everything else, there’s volunteer river guardians.

In January of last year Moody's the global corporate credit rating agency classified Thames Waters debt as "Junk status", that put TW in breach of their operating licence. And what has Ofwat done about it, yep, nothing. As Dirty Business illustrates water companies can do what the hell they like and get away with it. reuters.com/world/uk/moody…

@rtaylorjones Ravens are more or less a daily companion now, seven years ago they were rare enough to warrant me writing a letter to the EADT saying "I've just seen a bloody raven" or words to that effect

Who says clean energy and nature can’t thrive together? New @NatLabRockies research confirms what global studies are increasingly showing: utility-scale solar farms actively foster biodiversity By planting native prairie under panels, 3 sites in Minnesota have transformed into thriving sanctuaries for pollinators & wildlife - rivaling dedicated conservation lands. From US eco-voltaics to UK bird sanctuaries, the data is clear: we can power the grid AND restore habitats at the exact same time pv-magazine-usa.com/2024/11/25/new…

Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia, has made the planet itself the sole beneficiary and effective "shareholder" of his company. In an extraordinary move that redefined corporate ownership, Chouinard transferred full control of the $3 billion outdoor apparel brand away from his family. He placed 100% of the company into a carefully designed structure consisting of a trust and a nonprofit organization, both dedicated to combating the climate crisis and protecting the natural world. Under this new arrangement, the Chouinard family gave up any claim to personal profits. Instead, all earnings not reinvested in growing the business—roughly $100 million each year—now flow directly to environmental causes, funding the preservation of wild lands, conservation efforts, and initiatives to fight climate change. In essence, Patagonia now exists to serve Earth as its only true shareholder, placing planetary survival above the accumulation of private wealth. The model has already delivered significant results. As of 2025, the company had channeled an additional $180 million into nature-protection projects. The structure relies on two key entities: the Patagonia Purpose Trust, which safeguards the company’s original mission and values, and the Holdfast Collective, a nonprofit that directs the profits toward high-impact environmental work. Rather than selling the business to the highest bidder or taking it public, Chouinard chose this radical path—creating what many see as a groundbreaking template for purpose-driven capitalism. Patagonia has shown that a for-profit company can become a powerful force for ecological restoration while remaining financially successful. [Chouinard, Y. (2022). @MonicaHone To be fair loads of rivers have too much vegetation alongside them as we don’t have grazing animals that would normally keep it back. So too much leaf litter and not enough light hitting water. New flowering vegetation will come through that could be better for biodiversity.

This, apparently is the Greater Cambridge Chalk Stream Project (GCCSP) funded through a £420,000 grant from the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA). What's the biggest issue faced by Coldhams Brook? Apparently, it's the ecology on the riverbank.
Monica Hone 🍃💚🌿🤍💜@MonicaHone

Complete destruction of riverside flora on banks of Coldhams drain/ brook by contractors for @camcitco today. Trees felled, brambles strimmed to bare earth. /1

This should be all over the news. What an outrage. Just devastating. Prison will await those responsible. Anger is first emotion - but we need to find out why people did this and engage with their community better than we do. Otherwise, it’s just going to keep happening. Gutted
