1) The story of Bosco Nyirigira This is the story of Bosco Nyirigira, an RPA soldier who was captured by FAR in October 1990, and how his self-promotion to the rank of Major at the moment of his capture saved his life. Without that decision, he might have been thrown into Nasho Ranch to be killed by crocodiles, or cast into the Rwabayaga Cave. In the photo, he is Andre Kameya, a journalist who was later killed during the Genocide against the Tutsi in June 1994. Kameya had visited the RPA-liberated zone in 1993, after Nyirigira had been released and rejoined the RPA. When Nyirigira was captured alongside other soldiers under the command of the late Captain Bitamazire, he told Habyarimana’s soldiers that he was a Major. As a result, he was immediately taken to Lieutenant Colonel Anatole Nsengiyumva , Chief of Inttelligence and separated from his comrades, many of whom were later killed at Nasho and fed to crocodiles. At the time, the RPA had captured many FAR soldiers, including high-ranking officers. Nsengiyumva believed Nyirigira could be valuable for a potential exchange, given his supposed rank. The story of Major Nyirigira’s capture became widely known across the country. Journalist Jean Pierre Mugabe later visited him during his detention at Kigali Prison, where he conducted an interview.
