Guardian: 'Richard Dearlove, the former head of the British Secret Intelligence Service, said it was “extraordinary” that Mandelson’s appointment was announced before vetting was completed.' So there must have been a reason for doing that.

📍 Bangladesh 🏳️‍⚧️ When she was 10 years old, Joya Sikder began to feel and express herself as a girl. Today, she’s a trans woman and human rights defender with over 22 years of work in Bangladesh—advocating for: • The Hijra community, a culturally rooted gender identity from South Asia—representing a diverse community of transgender, intersex, and gender non-conforming people—and recognised as a third gender in Bangladesh. •Awareness of HIV/AIDS and condom use. •Sex workers’ rights. •The inclusion of marginalised women and LGBTQIA+ voices in the UN Universal Periodic Review. As founder and chief executive of Sompurna, Joya continues to champion the rights of transgender and gender-diverse communities. ✨ This International Transgender Day of Visibility, we honour defenders like Joya Sikder who inspire change worldwide. 🔗 Learn more: frontlinedefenders.org/en/profile/joy…

“Even the apartheid regime in South Africa did not dare to say that if a black man kills a white man, he will be executed. But if a white man kills a black man, he will not be. What Israel did…it is exactly that saying that a Palestinian could be sentenced to death penalty, but an Israeli no for the same crime.” -@MustafaBarghou1 on Israel’s new death penalty law.

I'm happy to announce this new paper — we compile evidence on the extraordinary harms caused by IMF and World Bank structural adjustment programmes in the global South since the 1980s. The empirical record is devastating: documented negative impacts on wages, poverty, inequality, maternal mortality, infant mortality, healthcare access, etc. SAPs inflicted misery on the periphery in order to curtail their consumption, scupper independent development, and make labour and resources more cheaply available for the core. gh.bmj.com/content/11/Sup…

Poll result — after nearly 11,000 votes, 96% of you say the UK should not provide military support to the US to attack Iran.

"An accountant by education, he is neither an economist nor a banker -- one of the prerequisites for holding the post of a central bank governor -- and he has never held a position in the banking or finance industry. The appointment becomes even more preposterous when one realises that to become the managing director of a bank, one needs to have a solid educational background, decades of banking experience and at least three years of experience as an additional or deputy MD, as per the BB’s own regulations. The new BB governor, who is part of the ruling party’s inner circle as demonstrated by his inclusion in the BNP’s election monitoring committee, would not qualify to helm a bank by central bank rules, let alone take the reins of the entire banking sector." I cannot recommend highly enough this free, open access resource for anyone teaching about slavery in the UK. It’s from historians who’ve actually researched it! uclpress.co.uk/book/teaching-…

In order to ensure free and fair elections tomorrow in #Bangladesh it is important that minority communities, where they feel at risk, are given appropriate protection and support, to help them vote, when that is what they wish to do. It has been brought to my attention that at least a section of the Hindu community in Panchagarh–1 have written to the Election Commission raising concerns about the law and order situation and asking for assistance so that they can vote. I do hope that in such situations like this (I am sure that this is not the only one) the Election Commission, in tandem with those involved in law enforcement, respond positively.
