Turkey are the more talented side, no argument, but talent isn’t always what decides a World Cup opener. Australia are built to make exactly this kind of game miserable. They sit in a compact 4-4-2 that slides into a 5-3-2, they defend their box as well as anyone left in this field, and they turn every long throw and corner into a real chance. Turkey’s one glaring weakness at Euro 2024 was set pieces, where they conceded more than any other team, and they get stretched badly in transition. That is a rough combination to face when the opponent’s entire plan is second balls and aerial duels. The deeper problem for Turkey is how they actually break a low block down. Montella overloads the middle to free his wingers, but without a true striker they end up whipping crosses into a back line that wins everything in the air. Now pull Kenan Yildiz out with that calf, lean on a Calhanoglu who may not start, and a big chunk of their creativity walks out the door with them.
