Schools aren’t abdicating their “educational duty” by setting boundaries; they’re exercising it. We’re not trying to recreate a mythical “simpler time” we’re creating the conditions for children to engage, think, and thrive in the present. 😡

Let’s be clear: banning phones in schools isn’t nostalgia or moral panic it’s a practical, evidence-based decision to support learning, social interaction, and attention. Every teacher knows how much time, focus, and wellbeing are lost to distraction and online pressures.

It sometimes feels as though education has become the easiest target for endless critique. Whatever step schools take, whether to improve behaviour, wellbeing, or focus, there’s a chorus ready to deconstruct and dismiss it as part of some “anti-something” movement.

'Ultimately, the anti-smartphone crusade feels like a nostalgic yearning for a simpler time that never truly existed. The solution isn't a ban that relieves us of our educational duty' schoolsweek.co.uk/banning-phones…

@virginmedia Yes. 10 days so far and suggesting another 5 before it’s fixed. No explanation. Repair date keeps shifting. Been a customer for 10 years. This is really poor customer service. Can anyone explain why there is a fault and a confirmed repair date?

Three weeks of unreliable broadband from @virginmedia . Constant dropouts, no resolution, and still being billed in full. Unacceptable service. Considering how much we pay, reliability shouldn’t be optional. #VirginMedia #BroadbandFail

Back in Lancashire to start my first day at a new school as Assistant Headteacher! Terrified is an understatement… however I am definitely happy to be back in the best county ever 👀

@Julespg No but had a few recently who have started referring directly to our in school counselling service. Slightly annoying that they are deciding how I use my resources in school. Makes it very difficult to tell parents that we have other, more needy pupils that already access

Serious question: Do doctors' surgeries actually make phone calls to schools reporting pupil illness? I'm not saying it doesn't happen, just that I've not come across it myself.

Anon post: Hi, I'm currently contemplating leaving my position as Headteacher. Although I've thoroughly enjoyed my role, it is now becoming unsustainable. Has anyone made a career transition outside of the school setting, or knows someone who has done so? Thanks in advance.

This isn’t the only way to ensure children are moving with pace & purpose in a safe and controlled manner. It’s not an environment I would have put my kids in, nor is it one I would consider teaching in. There are better ways than this.

Absolutely dystopian. This is a school, not a military pageant. What long-lasting damage this would be doing to many children's mental health.

This is a panopticon, not a learning environment. This non-autonomously driven self-regulation and self-monitoring won't be doing anyone any favours, but certainly teaches masking to neurodivergent kids from an early age, which can be associated with poor mental health outcomes and burnout. Kids need to be kids to an extent, and people working in schools should expect, want and encourage that to an appropriate level, I think. I can't help feeling that if schools were properly resourced and had much lower staff to pupil ratios, and the mood and wellbeing of all involved were a little better, this way of controlling children through extrinsic means would not be desired. Some rules, structures and boundaries are necessary, but this is too much. Where is the joy and enjoyment in being at school?
