I didn’t expect much from Laura Loomer’s interview with President Zelensky, so I wasn’t disappointed. On one hand, the interview was at times comical. Some of the questions were straight out of the russian propaganda playbook. But to Loomer’s credit, she would point out that these were propaganda points she wanted to debunk – so it wasn’t a setup or a hit piece. At the same time, it was typical MAGA advocacy. She tried to hint that Trump is the best president in U.S. history and tried to get Zelensky to say it. He didn’t – which is good. What gives me mixed feelings is the bigger pattern. I’d love to believe some MAGA loyalists are genuinely having a change of heart – Loomer, and now Tim Pool, another huge influencer who spent years calling Ukraine an enemy and is suddenly posting that Ukraine is “fighting for its very existence against an evil dictator.” But it’s hard to ignore that this shift lines up neatly with the election season and the incentive to sway people into the MAGA camp: “See, we support Ukraine, we’re standing against russian propaganda” – even though one of the biggest amplifiers of russian talking points has been Trump himself. So, mixed feelings overall. But I’m still glad that at least some genuine MAGA followers may be having a real turn of heart toward Ukraine.
