An individual involved in an altercation with officers should not lose their life unless there is an immediate and proportionate threat to life. The incident raises serious questions about the use of lethal force and risks being perceived as extrajudicial.

I’ve now watched several videos of the shooting in Granville. While the full facts must be allowed to emerge through a thorough and independent investigation, the preliminary details and footage paint a troubling picture.

Further questions remain about how the scene was processed and how the deceased’s body was handled.

.It also underscores the critical importance of body-worn cameras: without the available CCTV footage, the official descriptor would likely have been simply “killed in confrontation.”
