6 years clean & sober. May 8, 2020 Every year I celebrate another year sober, I reflect on the journey that brought me here. Straight up crawled from the trenches. Through overdoses, jail, mental institutions, and rehab — I almost let my trauma and addiction swallow me whole. From an insecure girl who couldn’t get through the day without drugs to a confident woman standing in front of hundreds of students sharing her story of addiction and recovery. Sometimes I can’t even believe how much life can change. I wish there was an easy answer for those still struggling, but the truth is: the only person who can get you out is you. Once you take away the drugs and alcohol, the real work begins. But that work makes you brave, and the journey becomes beautiful. For addicts, drugs feel like the answer. Most of us are hurting and searching for something to take the pain away. But I promise you — they’re selling a lie. Drugs will kill you. Your feelings will not. The life I live today and the life I lived in active addiction are complete opposites. I’m determined and motivated, which can be both powerful and dangerous. Today, I use that determination to constantly improve — to become a better person, mother, partner, and friend. I still chase dopamine, but now it comes from accomplishing my goals, chasing my passions, exercising my body, and taking care of myself. I’m grateful to still be here. Grateful for this new life. And I will never take it for granted. Thank you for being a part of my journey. 🖤
