(US only) I’ve observed that people who were recruited college athletes are excellent in several operating roles. Their work ethic, ability to balance priorities and team spirit is exemplary. Strongly recommend hiring a few fresh out of college and training them up.

DIVERSIFY YOUR EXPERIENCE There is a unique synergistic benefit that one gains by working both at startups (< 50 people) and large companies (> 500 people). Startups teach you scrappiness, agility, humility, hustle. Larger companies give you functional depth, expertise in processes to handle scale, reps in cross-functional collaboration. Experiencing both journeys fundamentally changes how you approach work. It makes you a more empathetic, effective (and successful) employee and colleague. For me, after spending several years at Google, starting a company in 2008 was a massive shock to the system, but the two experiences together made me an infinitely better doer and leader than each on its own. Implications: 1. Companies large and small should screen for people with both kinds of experiences. 2. Individuals should actively diversify their experience across these two buckets. Doesn’t need to be 50-50, but even 70-30 or 80-20 can massively change how effective you are in your next job.
