Mountjoy Prison, Dublin designed by Sir Joshua Jebb, was opened on 27th March 1850 when several horse drawn prison vans arrived at the prison containing 62 prisoners under sentence of transportation. These were transfers from Kilmainham, Newgate and Smithfield prisons.

#Cork man Dick Barrett spent time in Spike’s cells for his part in the fight for #irish freedom. He escaped by row boat & could not be rearrested due to the truce. He would not survive the Civil war. Following capture at the 4 courts, he was executed. #bandon #CorkCity #ireland

The Iveagh Markets shortly after completion in 1907, showing architect Frederick G. Hick's facade of crisp Newry granite, bone white Portland stone dressings and Portmarnock red brick. Sash and thermal windows are seductively dark-painted, the latter neatly tilting inwards.

On 12 August 1796, Kilmainham Gaol received its first prisoners. Describing the new gaol, Faulkner's Dublin Journal reported that 'for safety, healthfulness, convenience and compactness is said to be superior to any Prison in Europe'.

In 1920, women protested outside Mountjoy in support of the hunger strikers inside. In @irelandincolour, Professor John Breslin allows us to reimagine the past by adding colour to monochrome photos. Compare both versions with our interactive presentation rte.ie/history/2020/0…

Brendan Behan's The Quare Fellow was based on the execution of Bernard Kirwan which took place when Behan was in Mountjoy Prison in 1943. Some attribute the power of the play to the fact that there was no execution in Ireland after it was staged in November 1954. #HangedforMurder
