@JamesEvansMS It is not broken, and it is so deeply insulting to all of us who go out to work, who set up and run businesses, who help out at charities to say that it is. Politics is broken and Farage is helping to break it.

@ryankett I’m not sure there is much on offer there. There used to be some mixed fairs but I think most dealers concentrate on events where they can maximise potential buyers. I used to have more luck at general flea markets but it’s obviously a lottery as you can travel and find nothing.

Result of my flea market #postcard haul, as ever an eclectic mix. Trying to concentrate on military and social history but still came back with a pile of topographical cards I couldn’t resist🙄

It’s unlikely you would have forgotten, but the Fairburn (Leeds) postcards fair is tomorrow. Set your satnav to “WF11 9LA” and ⏩ It’s a smashing fair, and you’re sure to find some postcard treasure …

@PaulSuttonKing Cheers Paul. Fairburn (Leeds) for me on Sunday, proven a decent one for my interests last two times I've been!

A UK postgraduate junior doctor earning around £46,000 gross as an FY1 would take home only £35,000 after income tax, National Insurance and student loan repayments, whereas the same doctor moving to Dubai could realistically secure a tax-free package of £75,000–£80,000 (AED 30,000–35,000/month), pay roughly £4,800–£5,000 in student loan (due to the lower overseas threshold) and keep £70,000–£75,000 net. With Dubai’s cost of living 38% lower than London, that net income has the purchasing power of £114,000–£122,000 if spent in the UK — meaning the doctor would be approximately £79,000–£87,000 better off per year in real terms (226–250% more disposable income), able to save aggressively, pay off loans faster or enjoy a significantly higher standard of living, despite still having a small student loan obligation.

I think about leaving the UK more & more after each budget. But where do you go? Dubai? Monaco? Portugal? It’s sad. London used to be the global destination. Finance capital. Royalty. Beauty. History. A tax haven. Now? High taxes. High crime. Stagnant growth. Why stay? But seriously - where do you go?

@DHucks6 20% of the cost of cigarettes, if that, kids don't have twenty quid for a packet of fags. Ten to fifteen years ago they'd have been puffing a Mayfair Gold behind the bike sheds.

Genuine question, you see 1000's of youngsters Vaping all the time, the vast majority of them would've never smoked? Can that be right ? 🤷🏼‍♂️

I can't remember a time a budget has made me progressively more grumpy day-on-day over a period of several days like this one. How can you increase the tax burden on normal working people so substantially without committing to anything which can be classed as reformative or having any sort of coherent plan for growth beyond (paraphrased) "I'm crossing my fingers that the OBR growth forecasts are wrong"

'Median income' is a little misleading as it excludes dividend income so is essentially 'median PAYE salary'. Most business owners will pay themselves primarily with dividends. And this includes landlords who purchase property though a Ltd company. Triple lock is the ticking time bomb.

Thrilled to have published my first book 'Old Pontefract' through Stenlake, this project has been a labour of love for the past few years and utilises some of my many hundreds of Pontefract postcards. I've developed a newfound appreciation for the time, energy and patience required when publishing traditionally! The book will, at some stage, be stocked by a retailer in #Pontefract, and a couple of copies are on the way to to Ponte library, at the moment the most efficient way of obtaining a copy is via the Waterstones website or direct from the publisher at stenlake.co.uk (Amazon don't have their stock yet)

Barry Carrington's World Of Procrastination
@ryankett Both balance of taxation (heavy on employment, high productivity, and early life e.g. +9% graduate marginals cancelled at peak/late career), and balance of gov spending (the retired&retiring generational cohort, Vs. everyone), are way out of whack. Needs quad lock update:

This is insane. It's hard to even write a parody of these budget policies and comms. Cash ISA allowance reduced.. but not for age 65+ Thresholds frozen.. but not for State Pensioners. New gambling taxes.. bingo duty abolished. THEY ABOLISHED TAXES ON BINGO. I am not awake.
Martin Lewis@MartinSLewis

News! From 2027, the full new state pension will be higher than the tax-free allowance, so tax is due. The Chancellor had said people wouldn’t need to do assessments, but on my show tonight, Rachel Reeves said, they won’t pay tax at all this parliament. Watch the full show & budget interview on itv.com/watch/the-mart… PS I asked the Chancellor after that…  ‘what about those edge-cases who earn just a tiny bit elsewhere like small private pensions?’ she said they won’t be included in this and thus will pay tax.

When purchasing an annuity with a money market pension your options are essentially 'level', 'track RPI', or '3% escalation', the latter is very rarely purchased as it is offered at a huge premium due to risk to the provider (obvs). I personally feel that the state pension should just track RPI. CPI excludes mortgage interest, won't be relevant to most boomers, but may as well prepare now for a future where many will still be paying a mortgage into their 70's after getting on the ladder in their 40's. Why exclude mortgage interest now that mortgage lenders are lending up to 75 😂
