Shane Baz takes the mound tonight vs Tampa Bay for the second consecutive start.
Here's what @realbenmcdonald thought Baz did well last time out against Tampa just last week.

How Will Clark prepared for pitchers before every game:
"I got to the ballpark early, and I saw who I was facing... It starts early in the day figuring out what I'm going to be looking for, I take it into early batting practice... then I take it into batting practice and work on it on the field... You start working on those things then all of a sudden you get in the game like, oh there it is, I was just working on it. Bam."
English

"I sat in on a hitters meeting, this was a few years ago... One guy got up to speak and he's like I'm going to look for the fastball... I want the ball up where I can drive it... I said, y'all are going to see sliders. Somebody better hit a slider... 7th inning here comes their reliever 2 outs man on 2nd slider slider slider strike 3"
Will Clark recalls sitting in on a Padres hitters meeting a few years back.

@ryanripkenshow I was 10 when that song came out….that’s crazy town

@EutawStReport Shane’s slider is 88 and different profile than Roger’s 82 cut/slider.

This looks like the exact pitch Dingler hit out yesterday

Shane McClanahan, Nasty 88mph Slider. 😨

Typically a changeup away to righties is more effective than in. This location being down and in gave Tork a better shot to drive it. I have to go back and look at the tape a little closer.
Also another note just on baseball feel: If a hitter sees a pitch very well out of the hand, he can still put a really good swing on it, regardless of location.
English

@ryanripkenshow Ryan. What about the change up to Tork in the 2nd inning? Just a bad location because it was in and not enough movement/differential? It was an out but hit well.

English

Could he be tipping pitches? Yeah he could be.
But watching the replay back that 2-1 slider wasn’t located well to a righty.
It might track as a borderline pitch at bottom of the zone, but that area is a wheelhouse spot for a righty hitter, especially on a breaking ball.
Jacob Calvin Meyer@jcalvinmeyer
The pitch that Trevor Rogers gave up a two-run homer on in the first inning was barely touching the strike zone. It was a 2-1 slider, and it was thrown exactly where Samuel Basallo was set up. Dillon Dingler looked like he was waiting for exactly that pitch, and he hit it out.
English

For Dillon Dingler, 8 of his 10 HRs have come on off speed pitches located middle and in.
So while yes the data and stats can tell a story, game matchups are different. And clearly Dingler likes that region and hitting offspeed.
Also, hitter's average was .429 off that cut/slider from Rogers going into today.
English

@jcalvinmeyer @ryanripkenshow League-wide last year and so far this year (totaled together) righties are .159/.205/.327 with a .233 wOBA against sliders from lefties in roughly that zone, so I’d personally say that location is probably decent
English

@ryanripkenshow @jcalvinmeyer I think the kids were busy talking about which ice cream to get or the fresh mini donuts.
Which I understand is just as important 🤣🤣
English

@jfcatcher23 @jcalvinmeyer Like I said it’s all possible. But this sequence and pitch favored Dingler. That’s a sweep spot for him.
How Roger’s pitched Dingler 2nd AB felt more like the plan.
English

@baltimorejoe82 I have yet to see that live. How’d it turn out?
