@GulliblexD @TheMisterEpicYT To add to what you said about expenses being higher: if we were to recreate MineSaga now, we’d be needing to spend significant funds on things like models, custom UI, textures, & even MORE on marketing
It’s so hard to create a sustainable, quality product with no ‘p2w’ elements

Let me share an insight into the finances of one of my servers from a few years back. I've owned and operated various Minecraft servers over the years but the one that stands out is MineSaga, a Skyblock server that hit its peak of 5,200 CCUs back in September 2018.
We operated for close to 3 years and had an all-time gross revenue in the seven-figure range and generated revenue into the six-figure range during our biggest months.
Let's take for instance a month where we pulled in $110,000 in revenue. MineSaga had 3 owners - myself and two longtime friends. Each of us played a pivotal role in the success of MineSaga. I handled the day-to-day operations, another led all our marketing initiatives and content updates, and the 3rd owner served as our lead developer.
In this particular month, our expenses amounted to $48,000, and this was before any of us took a single dollar as payment. These costs included:
- Advertisement ($28,000)
- Additional development ($2,000)
- Hardware & DDoS protection ($2,000)
- Island top rewards ($5,000)
- Various other expenses like builds, Tebex, and staff managers
These are just a few of the significant expenses directly associated with operating the server. Additionally, we had an accountant, a solicitor, and an investment advisor with an average monthly cost of around $1,000 each. We also had the obligation to pay 20% of any revenue generated from EU member states in VAT MOSS and 19% corporation tax on any profit we made. It's also worth noting that these figures are from 5 years ago. Since then, hosting costs, builders, key services and content creators have all massively increased their prices while the cost of items for sale on Minecraft servers has remained relatively the same.
This is just an average month for us. There were instances where we made one-off payments such as $5,000 to Cloudflare for advanced DDoS protection as all other solutions were not cutting it or a brand new website theme, just as an example. We also had other fairly significant expenses such as our physical office, virtual office, bank service charges, etc.
After all these expenses, yes, during good months we were able to take fairly comfortable salaries. However, keep in mind that we were each working almost 100-hour weeks to ensure that the server was running smoothly. There were also several months towards the beginning of the project where we didn't take a single dollar and instead, reinvested everything we made.
Crates made up over 50% of our revenue, and we simply wouldn't have been able to operate in the way we did without them. All items found within our crates were also available for purchase directly on our store, without the necessity of having to open a crate to get it. We didn't force users to buy a crate to obtain a specific item. The concept of "luck-based gambling" is prevalent all around you. Is opening a packet of Pokemon trading cards in hopes of getting the rarer, more expensive card "unethical" for example?
I wanted to share this as I haven't seen many "large" server owners discuss what it costs to run a large-scale network publicly. Running a server involves countless sleepless nights and incredibly long work hours. There's no time off, you constantly worry about how your server is performing, and it truly is one of the most draining experiences I've ever had. The narrative of pay-to-win server owners sitting back, doing nothing, and watching the money roll in is mostly untrue. When servers introduce more crates or more pay-to-win features, it most likely isn't because of greed and is more likely because the server is trying to survive.
