I’ve recently had the misfortune of angering a bunch of Catholics by disagreeing with someone saying, “I want Japan to be Catholic.” Shinto and Buddhism are the major religions of Japan and replacing them totally with Catholicism would erase a lot of Japanese cultural practices. I’ve got no problem with Catholicism and I’m not saying the 0.34% of Japanese people who are Catholic are less Japanese. I’m saying: “I want Japan to convert to [insert religion here]” is a generally unwelcome attitude no matter which religion you are pushing. Not only that but I’ve come across many Catholics who are not only pushing their religion but are also being aggressive about Shinto/Buddhism. - Thats a false religion - You are going to hell - Those religions aren’t real There’s also the ridiculous statement that Buddhism is a “foreign religion” so therefore it’s ok to replace it with another foreign religion (as if Buddhism hasn’t been part of Japan for 1500 years and not only shaped but been shaped by the country). There are thousands of gods observed by Shinto. That’s why the presence of other religions are tolerated/respected by people in Japan. It’s ingrained in the culture. I’ve been living in Japan since 2006 and I understand this. I don’t think Japan is going to convert to Catholicism or any other religion. And you guys pushing it while calling me a “white savior” or “outsider” are being ridiculous. You are literally trying to “save Japan” with your “outside” religion because you don’t respect Japanese culture. Once again, I have no problem with you being Catholic if you want to be. But keep your religion to yourself. If you are not awful people might come to your religion on their own. Being aggressive about it makes you troublesome.
