It was really great to interview Nate Soares @So8res on his views on AI alignment, a field which he founded and devoted much efforts on, for the Ultra Science show at TBS, the broadcaster in Tokyo which aired the original Ultraman series in the 1960s, with my co-presenter journalist Ryan Takeshita @ryuichirot. Analysis and argument presented in If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies, co-authored with Eliezer Yudkowsky @ESYudkowsky are logically rigorous and insightful, and did a great service to artificial intelligence community. During the conversation it emerged that Nate is deeply committed to realize superintelligence truly aligned with humans, which he thinks is actually possible. Nate is not against AGI or ASI. His cautionary language only belongs to this particular time window of human history where we don’t have sufficient knowledge about alignment while capabilities of AI expands according to the scaling hypothesis. If Nate is appears to be a AI doomer for now, it’s only a phase he is going through. He is actually an AI optimist in the true sense of the word, because he believes that it is actually possible to build an AGI or ASI if we care enough and take sufficient time. The very insightful interview will be published for the Japanese audience with Japanese subtitles. If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies will be published in Japanese in a few weeks.
