During the 2001 Indian Parliament attack, Kamlesh Kumari Yadav of the Central Reserve Police Force did not step back—she stepped forward. In a split second that would define history, she noticed something others might have missed: a suspicious vehicle speeding toward the Parliament complex. Without hesitation, without thinking of herself, she ran toward danger, raised the alarm, and ensured the gates were secured. Moments later, the suicide vest detonated. Outside. Not inside. Because of her. Hundreds of lives were saved that day—leaders, staff, security personnel, and countless others who made it back home… only because she chose duty over her own safety. But the danger wasn’t over. The terrorists opened fire. Eleven bullets struck her. Yet even as she fell, her courage stood unshaken—stronger than the fear that tried to breach the Parliament of India. She was not a victim. She was a protector—till her very last breath. For her extraordinary bravery, she was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award.
