The Zimbabwean government did not commit genocide against Matebeleland on behalf of Shona people as revenge for the 19th century Ndebele raids by Mzilikazi Chofamba.
Gukurahundi was perpetrated against Matebeleland because in the first election in 1980,
Non Shona people in Matebeleland,
Voted against ZANU which got zero/20 seats in Matebeleland,
And Mugabe & ZANU couldn’t stomach that,
They wanted a one party state.
The narrative that Gukurahundi was done on behalf of Shona people,
And not on behalf of ZANU,
To create a one party state,
Only serves to collectivise the guilt for the genocide.
This benefits the perpetrators and deepens ethnic tensions.
Because the Kalanga and other groups killed by the Gukurahundi,
Will now ask the Shona,
In your revenge against the Ndebele kingdom,
Why did you kill us too?
Why then did the Gukurahundi genocide also kill Kalangas?
And many other victims of Ndebele raids from the 19th century?
Joshua Nkomo himself was Kalanga,
A victim of the Ndebele kingdom.
So were the majority of victims of the Gukurahundi genocide in Plumtree.
Bhalagwe was situated in a Kezi- a Kalanga area.
When we say Ndebeles in the context of Gukurahundi,
We mean people from Matebeleland,
Who included Vendas, Kalangas, Xhosas and many other groups,
Who were bundled into one by the Gukurahundi genocidiare,
Who were looking for all non-Shona people.
The Gukurahundi only targeted non Shona speakers,
To survive you only had to prove your Shona-ness.
So while we need truth telling and justice for victims of subjugation by the Ndebele in the 18th century,
Gukurahundi was not redemption for that,
Because Gukurahundi targeted victims of the same Ndebele kingdom.
Zimbabwe’s ethnic history must be told,
As the only beneficiary of the flawed narratives,
Is the oppressor.
Gukurahundi targeted foetuses,
Toddlers,
Women - descendants of women some Shona people claim were stolen from them by Mzilikazi,
Gukurahundi raped women and young girls,
Instead of trying to paint it as redemption,
You must be screaming:
Not in our name,
As most sane people the world over do,
When genocidaires try and hide behind their grievances.
The tensions from the subjugation of the Shona by Mzilikazi are real and must not be trivialised.
But please,
Don’t use them to whitewash the genocide by ZANU.
Do not conflate ZANU with all Shona peoples.

I had a difficult conversation with an older friend of mine who comes from Zvimba. He narrated stories from his grandmother about their people’s experiences with the Ndebele from the 19th century. I quickly realised that as a Ndau from south-eastern Zimbabwe, my people’s historical experience was very different from his. There’s certainly an unspoken conversation about historical tribal injustices and there are very specific ethnic communities in Zimbabwe who, more than anyone else, need to be involved in such a conversation as part of a truth and reconciliation process. I’m persuaded that Mugabe and some of his ardent allies during the 80s had 19th century historical experiences in their minds when they unleashed Gukurahundi in Matabeleland and Midlands provinces.
