I’m not surprised more of this work is done by AI, since the aim is not to write, it’s to convey a few key pieces of information. The writing around it is often set dressing.

The people who read these texts don’t envision a story. They jump around in the text, looking for the most relevant piece of data for their own work. Like sifting through recycling to find copper or glass or whatever is useful for you.

When I left journalism and dipped my toes in corporate writing, I would often get lots of edits back that surprised me. To my eye, they made the text worse. Eventually I realized corporate writing is its own language and syntax. It’s this language AI does so well.

That's a great question. It may be the result of some of the supervised fine-tuning. In order to get it to respond naturally to modern-day user input (which it had never encountered in the training corpus), I had to generate a few thousand "synthetic" multi-turn conversations using other LLMs. It also may be a bit of a chicken and egg situation. This model was trained on thousands of pages of public-domain classic literature - and so were modern LLMs!

One of the most entertaining things about a language model trained entirely on Victorian novels, is that it thinks that it is *in* a Victorian novel, and so invents Victorian scenarios:

It is astounding how pretty much the entire left have given up on climate change as an issue. It was omnipresent for ages, and now it barely features at all in leftist discourse. Sort of makes you wonder if their commitment to it was ever real.

I don’t read as much as I used to. I picked human writing one time in that quiz. My friends who read an insane amount and are in writing groups picked AI almost every time. It’s fine, the quiz was badly designed!

The FT and other pub’s real bread and butter is access and trend stories. You can’t replicate those with AI unless you’re either interviewing execs yourself. Otherwise if you’re just taking news and personalizing it, you’re publishing after it’s moved markets.

People don’t want a chatbot that tells them “this news impacted your position this much.” That’s a watchlist and a number and they have both already.
They want a curated collection of info outside of the obvious things they know impact their portfolio.

I built a AI native version of the Financial Times... It's better than the FT in two ways: 1) Each article is written bespoke for each reader. Not "markets were down yesterday." Instead: "Apple fell 2.3%. That's -$215 on your S&P 500 position." Every story, through the lens of your own money. 2) Each reader gets paired with their own personal AI reporter who stays with them for life.
