Today, I submitted my PhD thesis: “The Shadow Archive: Politics, Place, and Failure in the Postclassical Sagas” for examination. There aren’t enough Twitter characters to thank everybody who helped me during this project, so I’ve shared my acknowledgements. Thank you. ❤️

The show doesn't (yet) have a behind-the-scenes and outtakes segment, but if it did, you'd get to hear George apply Germanic rules and derive the abstract noun for 'chonky' as 'chength'. e.g. "check out the chength of that cat"

If I have to change platforms because this bird app dies, I'm gonna merge my accounts, so find me on Mastodon @Ludohistory@mstdn.party . I wasn't the most active here, but if you want to stay in touch ig that's the best way.

@queerdievalist @jesbattis @rojulian8 @rousemedieval oof, for a 9th-grader....the best bets are either Jesse Byock's Viking Language series or *Old Norse for Modern Times* by Ian Sharpe, Arngrimur Vidalin, and Josh Gillingham, but I don't know that either of them will be a great choice.

I'm so excited to be organizing this, and can't believe we're already only a week out from the first episode! Big thanks to everyone involved, and hopefully I'll see some #Norsestudies friends in chat! (I'm also looking for more guests starting in January, just saying.. )

The reviews for #GodofWarRagnarok are in and spectacular. But is its mythology as good as its story? One week left until @OSPyoutube and I find out (with the help of some brilliant experts) live on Twitch! Make sure you follow to avoid missing out! twitch.tv/ludohistory

@queertyyr oh christ, I can think of some crazy examples and I feel like I know only the tip of the iceberg (like, there's a fringe theory floating around that Valholl is modeled on a Roman amphitheatre? I've only seen a promo for a talk about that, not the theory itself).

While horses can 'canter' in any direction in English today, the word was originally used for travelling at a steady pace as if towards one particular destination – it's a clipping of 'Canterbury'.

@MetalClassicist I've been trying to sort out my feelings about it (read: bugging museum studies friends) all day! It's good, but in a way that I hope scares heritage professionals (i.e. if we don't start being more transparent, we're gonna rightly become villains in popular imagination)

@DJMHarland we're already seeing it used that way on reddit... it's so unsurprising and I wish geneticists would just stop.

@HistoryGreatWar @SashoTodorov1 @killerswan @JakeAnbinder Sorry that I can't be around 24/7 to answer "why didn't Columbus know about Leif Erikson's trip" for the 15th time? Link drops are a necessary part of never having enough people active on the site. So don't use them as a reason to discourage participation pls!

Since there is not always agreement on what people mean when they say "history jobs crisis," this info clarifies that the job market has been cut in half since 2013. That's the present jobs crisis.

it's revealing how many n*zis are in the replies here saying "you're a coward for apologizing". It's a bad non-apology, but it seems even that low bar infuriated the audience that latched onto the post and thought it was good. i.e., n*zis.
American Historical Association@AHAhistorians

Please read this apology from James H. Sweet regarding his recent #AHAPerspectives column. "I apologize for the damage I have caused to my fellow historians, the discipline, and the AHA. I hope to redeem myself in future conversations with you all." #Message-from-James-H-Sweet-August-2022" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">historians.org/news-and-advoc…
