Is an MBA worth all the CAT/XAT stress anymore? Here are some life lessons !!
This is a question I get asked often. Is getting into an MBA programme from a top institute in India still worth it in the long run? From my own experience at IIM Indore, I genuinely believe a large part of the value lies in the journey of getting there itself.
It all starts with CAT preparation, which honestly is like climbing a mountain in its own right. CAT showed me a lot of my strengths and weaknesses as well. I was always strong in math and data, and that strength continues to guide how I approach the stock markets even today. English was never my strongest area, but I worked on it just enough to ensure it didn’t pull my overall performance down.
CAT isn’t a test of intelligence alone. A very important aspect of it is understanding the art of elimination. Instead of obsessing over finding the “right” answer first, you learn to quickly eliminate the wrong ones. That mindset stayed with me well beyond the exam hall. I take this approach in investing too. I may not always know the perfect stock to buy, but knowing what to avoid often matters just as much.
Despite all these learnings and what one could consider a decent score, I didn’t make it to IIM Ahmedabad or Bangalore. And yes, that was disappointing back then. But life is about playing the hand you are dealt and making the best of it. IIM Indore turned out to be exactly where I needed to be. I remain deeply grateful for how that phase shaped my thinking, my perspective, and my career.
If you are on a similar journey, or dealing with a setback, remember this: identify your strengths, manage your weaknesses, and keep moving forward. The learning never really stops, and that, more than anything else, is what makes the journey worthwhile.
And for the young ones who’ve just got done with CAT, and are dreading the results — don’t worry. You will land exactly where you are supposed to and the way God has intended. Whichever way it is, keep going!
