Enrile is dead. I grieve for the reckoning that never came. This was one of the Marcos dictatorship’s architects, a failed junta leader, a thief of people’s money, and a man whose entire political career was built on impunity. He escaped accountability to the very end, a reminder of how power and wealth can shield someone from the rule of law. And no, history will not deliver the justice we keep deferring. His death only makes clear that the work of holding the powerful to account is something we must do in our own lifetimes, or it will not happen at all.
