This man, linked to extremist views, was arrested in 2019, claimed that looted items from resorts were halal “ghanima”. Attacked own elder brother’s head with a knife and threw him overboard a boat. Sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2022. That sentence was commuted to just five days, and released by President @ibusolih on September 19, 2023. Arrested again this week in relation to a MVR 4 million robbery. @presidencymv powers and privileges have become a calamity upon us and the greatest obstacle to justice and good governance in Maldives.

What a resounding win for the Maldivian people 🙌🏾 A significant blow to President @MMuizzu’s legitimacy; a loud and clear “no” to an intrusive, arrogant, corrupt, overly centralised, near-monarchical presidency. A firm rejection of patronage politics; the dishing out of money, jobs, favours, and contracts.

As long as this monarchy-like executive @presidencymv remains in place, the entire state will continue to revolve around the whims of the valiyyul amr. @MDPSecretariat must rise to the occasion and muster the strength and humility to: •Acknowledge past mistakes •Confront the need for meaningful, systemic reform —not peddle the illusion that simply changing the governing party or president will magically solve everything.

Last night’s anticlimactic @MDPSecretariat “celebration” only benefited @MMuizzu and the ruling @pnc_secretariat. No clear message. No strategy. People expected direction, a plan to manoeuvre, and renewed hope from both presidents. But @ibusolih chose silence if it meant denying @MohamedNasheed the space to speak; a complete waste. When authority is this consolidated, inaction and delay is not a constraint, it is a choice.
