One year ago, two large earthquakes struck Türkiye, killing nearly 60,000 people. In the year since, >18,000 aftershocks have been recorded, and 150 geology and engineering studies published. What have we learned? We look back - and forward - in our latest post:

We stacked all the GPS time series ever recorded before large earthquakes. The result is pretty interesting: science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

The study conducted continuous GNSS measurements over a period of 3.5 years at a site in the Western High, which clearly indicated right-lateral displacement at a rate of 10.7 ± 4.7 mm/year (95% confidence level). Read more: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

Very interesting paper about fault behavior in the Sea of Marmara: The western part of the fault ix creeping ~11 mm/yr, releasing ~half of the strain. Unfortunately, the eastern part, near Istanbul, seems to be fully locked. 1/ agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

The yellow dot is approx. epicenter of today's M6.3 earthquake. Notice it's at the southern end of aftershock epicenters from the M7.8 main shock. Faults in this area lead offshore to the Cyprus subduction zone. I'm keeping an eye on this area for that reason. (map by @gmazet)

Continents rift apart and form oceans in three main ways. In a new #AGUpubs paper scientists report on a computer model that allowed them to study how networks of faults in rift zones influence those different types of rifting. See the paper at fal.cn/3oo2i
