You're missing the others who would be unhappy with the results—of either party's "happiness." The basic truth of civilization: Any rule, law, or benefit designed to help one group (or one person) will almost certainly harm or disadvantage someone else. This happens even in everyday interactions—jealousy, shaming, status competition—because one person's gain often feels like another's loss. I'm not a pessimist. I believe happiness and love are not zero-sum. We can create more together. The issue is humans. Pretending that "making someone else happy makes me happy" magically expands total happiness without trade-offs or victims... is not the real world.

Taught 14 yo (he's now 14) about the concept of a conservation law, and how doing good things for people seems to violate one in the sense that it makes them happier but makes you happier too.
