This one really made me think. Best guess: stresses. The stresses involved in gear mechanics were harder to overcome through preexisting protein machinery than evolved skeletal structures. For example if you look at collagen and other collective tissue proteins they are VERY good at horizontal, linear stress, stretching and compression, but probably not at shear stress that would result from something like a biomechanical gear. Contrast this with microscopic nanogears on the cell level. They don't need to concern themselves as much with stress because mass/scale. I could be wrong here. This was a fun thought experiment, thankyou.

I wonder why evolution was able to figure out microscopic gears but never macroscopic ones.
