‘A plum stone on the side of the plate’. A spare, devastating finale. Rafe’s sorrow. Henry’s vanity. Mary’s disdain. That music. And Thomas’s prayer for forgiveness, from Wolsey, a masterstroke. Damien Lewis’s Henry, unsurpassed. Mark Rylance, everything. Thank you all. #WolfHall

@clhubes I haven’t seen it in a while but the song that has stuck with me is Anna’s ‘do the next right thing’ - quite helpful when I’m feeling overwhelmed with shit to do, but recently found out it’s also a cornerstone of AA!

@clhubes Even worse than the massive plot holes, IMO, are the B characters paired up with Elsa (lullaby fan) Anna (army dude) and Kristof (other reindeer stan) - they have approx half a line each and add NO THING to the story 🙃

Why do I always forget, between writing sessions, that all it consists of is… writing? Put down a word. Put down another. You can fix the order later. Like Guy de M said ‘put back on white’ ✍️

@aa_megh Just finished this yesterday - great review! ‘A deep breath of fresh air’ is just right. I described its beautifully expressed wisdom as being ‘like food’ to my OH.

I've just taken on the most brilliant book (and author). He's not on social media so I can't loop him in, but it's a deeply Welsh literary 'folk horror', set in the Welsh valleys. It focuses on an older couple, together 50 years and the last in a long, long line of farmers

I'm think of teaching a free 1hr short-story writing workshop - like a 101 of structure and shape (the hardest thing to do in the short form, imho). First, would you be interested? Second, pls RT! Probably early July.

@coopuk is the co-op membership card a scam or am I doing it wrong? The shop is full of discount labels but for my first two shops (both £60+) only £1 was deducted when I presented my card at the checkout 🫤

@latertuliia Fair enough! Feeling quite intimidated by it myself, but need some writing inspo on literary mysteries and narrative structure…

@salskins I'm thinking I should stick to shorter books. I'm not sure I can commit at the moment. It looks huge. 🥲

What do I read next? I want to read A. S. Byatt's Possession or Bolaño's 2666 but they look huge (as a result to the current events, my attention span is at 5.6 on a scale from 1 to 100 so no huge books for me at the moment).
