Adam's very good at not letting us indulge ourselves too much, but he, @D_C_W and I did a bit of it yesterday to mark 5 (FIVE) years of the @FootballCliches pod - in amongst the usual bits and bobs. What a joy it's been, thanks for listening! pod.fo/e/2a2804

@FootballCliches Watching the Brighton game yesterday on MOTD and heard the Brighton fans singing 'Albion, Albion...'. Made me wonder what albion means, genuinely surpised at what it does! I then wondered how many of the fans of 'albion' teams actually know what it means?! I don't reckon many!

VAR has failed. It has marginally improved accuracy of decisions but crushed football’s greatest attribute: that detonation of spontaneous joy when a goal is scored thetimes.co.uk/article/var-cr…

@UTMBWorldSeries This is appalling behaviour. I can't fathom how UTMB thought this was a good idea. Huge backlash already and much more to come I'm sure.

@LPG1704 @UTMBWorldSeries V hard to give a direct comparison. Imagine if League 1 was an amateur league, being run very well by a grassroot man who was highly respected. Only for UEFA to decide 'oh that looks pretty good we'll pay the FA and steal that from you and set up our own thing with the same name'

Henri Lansbury has apparently retired from football at 32 to focus on his lawn fertiliser business, which has received glowing reviews from the likes of Micah Richards, Tom Lockyer, & James Chester. Regrettably, he named the company 'Grass Gains', rather than 'Henri Lawnsbury'.

@CDEccleshare Great article, as is often the case with your writing Charlie! I do wonder though... if Alcaraz came up 10 years ago, would he break that top 3? Is he looking more likely to do so than others in the past because the 3 greats are simply ageing/retired/injured?

The last 20 years has been littered with young players coming through but failing to unseat members of the Big Three. Carlos Alcaraz is different. And his variety is the biggest reason theathletic.com/4686831/2023/0…

@Zonal_Marking Really enjoyed this Michael. Too often Guardiola fans simply dismiss this criticism. But as you have shown, he has genuinely overthought things in some of the CL ties. But, as you rightly show, certainly not all the time! As with most things, a balanced view on this is correct.

Always a bit sceptical about the OVERTHINKING thing, so I went back through Guardiola's Champions League exits (and triumphs) and looked at his tactical approach. theathletic.com/4488348/2023/0…

@Zharrt @FootballCliches Yeah, when I found it out, it blew my mind. I guess I had always thought it meant something like 'united' or 'collective'.

@FootballCliches Wife asked me the other day when I was watching Brighton play, 'what does Albion mean'? Left me dumbfounded. Had to Google it, and had no idea it meant what it did. Made me wonder if West brom/burton/Brighton fans actually know? Or do any football fans know what albion means??

@FootballCliches Irritation - I find it infuriating when after a player scores a goal and they look *really* angry and start to run off to celebrate, only for their team mates to hold them back/hug them. I want to see an explosion of rage, and the team mates just get in the way! Let them unleash!
