A slightly surreal way to spend a Monday evening.
I had the opportunity to hear Terry Szuplat - former speechwriter to President Obama - speak about his work with one of the greatest orators of our time.
My interest in politics started with 7-year-old me sitting in front of the TV, watching Obama become President. I didn’t fully understand the policy or the process back then - but I understood how it felt.
So to now meet someone who helped shape the words behind those moments, felt pretty full circle.
One insight that really stayed with me: Obama’s view that the most persuasive speakers aren’t necessarily the most polished - they’re the ones who speak with conviction and tell their own sacred story. That idea of grounding your message in something personal, honest, and deeply held.
It was a powerful reminder that no matter what sector you communicate in, authenticity is what lands.
He’s also just a genuinely nice person, which made the whole experience even better!
