U.S. intelligence confirms Iran deployed mines during the war from a stockpile of thousands. The weapons sit on the sea floor, float just below the surface, or drift with currents. Some launch a charge upward when a ship passes overhead. The technology exists. Knifefish and Kingfish underwater drones scan the ocean floor using sonar, comparing what they see against pre-war maps to spot anything new. If the Strait isn't actually mined in certain areas, safe passages could be established in days. The problem: clearing a lane today doesn't mean it's clear tomorrow.
