We had a new paper out last week: doi.org/10.1007/s00374…
We show that, under lab conditions, MAOM can contribute a significant amount of N to the inorganic N pool (up to ~75% of the total!). This proportion was moderated by the POM:MAOM and the POM C:N ratio.

@Sajjad_Razza Great paper, Sajjad! A key point and one that isn’t considered enough. I’m curious your thoughts about breeding for conservation.
Are there opportunities to improve some of our regenerative practices via breeding as well (region/soil adapted cover crops, root architecture, etc)?

Our paper in Nature Plants is finally online.

We have highlighted that modern crop breeding and seed certification agencies ignore the known spatial heterogeneity of soils and develop cultivars to thrive in a ‘one-size-fits-all’ soil environment.

There's a lot more to this paper, and I encourage you to check it out if you're thinking about formation and persistence of POM and MAOM.
I feel very grateful to have gotten to work on it -- a special thank you to @jso_soong, @KonzaLTER, and @USDA_NIFA for making it possible.

Very excited to have this out (and in Nature Geoscience, no less!).
We returned to in-field incubations of isotopically enriched litter and pyrogenic OM ten years after inception, and were able to glean some insights into the persistence patterns of the SOM that was formed.
