Vairamuthu has not produced any work worthy of being conferred the Jnanpith. None of his writings would enter even the top hundred in Tamil literature, nor do his poems possess significant literary value. It only goes to show how powerful his lobby is, especially his closeness to the ruling state government, which, at least on the face of it, seems to be at odds with the Union government.

At a time when modern Tamil literature is speaking to the world via serious practitioners (writers, translators, and sincere readers), it's infuriating to see the Jnanpith Award take such a regressive step. An award is only as valuable as its roster of winners. This is a disgrace

Conferring Jnanapeeta on Vairamuthu is an insult to Tamil's great literary heritage. Great tamil writers like Asokamithran, Ki Rajanarayan to name a few were not conferred this award. What to say. Shameful

Was a little too shy to post this all along but now that the book is out, readers can decide if they agree with it. There's a whole essay by Jeyamohan on the original impulse behind writing the stories in பத்து லட்சம் காலடிகள் which ends with generous praise for the translation!
