Today we had a small function at home. Since morning, Papa and Grandpa had been busy taking care of everything food, guests, and all the expenses that come with hosting so many people. While I was nearby, I overheard Grandpa quietly telling Papa, I don't have any cash left. I'll have to go to the bank tomorrow. Neither of them uses UPI or online payments, and in our village, cash is still how most things get done. They never asked me for money. They probably never would have. I opened my purse to see what I had. There was 9k in cash. I walked over to Grandpa and handed it to him. He immediately refused and said, No, keep it. We'll withdraw money from the bank tomorrow. I didn't argue. I just smiled, slipped the money into his pocket, and walked away. A few moments later, I looked back and saw tears in his eyes. I don't think he cried because of the 9k. Maybe it was because I had become financially independent. Grandpa had always dreamed that one day his Rutu would earn her own money, stand on her own feet, and never have to depend on anyone. Today, without him asking, I was able to help him instead. I don't know what was going through his mind at that moment, but the tears in his eyes said more than words ever could. Some moments stay with you forever. This will always be one of mine.
