I had to make a hard decision in Russia. I just came back home after spending 25 days in St. Petersburg - a world completely isolated from the Western system, including bank cards, SIM cards, and most importantly, Western social media apps. And that ended up being my biggest takeaway. There are many things I could write about Russia, its history, culture, and the beauty of St. Petersburg, but in this article, I want to focus on just one thing. Once I arrived, I couldn’t access Instagram, X, or LinkedIn without a VPN. At first, it felt uncomfortable. But then I noticed something: everyone there uses @telegram as their main social environment. People join groups, follow channels, network, and stay updated—all in one place. On Instagram, X, and LinkedIn, you see what the algorithm wants you to see. Even if you switch your feed to “Following only,” it always pushes you back to “For You.” Your timeline is shaped by an algorithm, not by your choices. Telegram doesn’t work like that. It only shows the chats, groups, and channels you personally choose, ordered chronologically by the latest message. It completely changes the experience. You have real control over what you see. During my stay, I got used to not using Western apps at all. Opening them required a VPN, so I eventually stopped. And that’s when I realized how toxic and addictive Instagram is. I would open the app, and from the very first second, I’d fall into meaningless, brainless content. I’m done with “For You” timelines. I want more control over my social media presence.
