An update: this fall, I’ll be joining @UDSOE within @UDCEHD as an Assistant Professor in the Educational Statistics and Research Methods program. I could not be more excited!

In anticipation of IOMW 2025, we’ve posted a preprint of the paper we’ll be discussing there. Take a look! osf.io/preprints/psya…

Ever wanted to investigate DIF by more than one variable at once? My colleague Ethan McCormick and I have created an NCME ITEMS module on DIF analysis with multiple background variables using moderated nonlinear factor analysis. Take a look! ncme.org/itemsportal/di…

@DrTeyaR My favorite was the obviously AI-generated negative evaluation of our proposal that the reviewer pasted in 😬

My *favorite* #AERA2025 negative reviewer comment? "The symposium focuses on student motivation. From my perspective the field of educational research would benefit more from a focus on learning outcomes." Noted. I'll now reconsider my entire research agenda.

@MatthewBJane what’s old is new again, ha! But like you’ve said it really has its uses, eg early in item analysis, so I’m all for re-popularizing it. I’m no expert on nonparametric IRT but this seems like the sort of thing that would be very useful for eg Mokken scaling

@MatthewBJane I think this is sometimes called a Guttman chart, in reference to a Guttman scale and the process of scalogram analysis. The more consistent the relationship between item p and person p, the more “scalable” the items (to use the Guttman terminology).

🗣️🗣️🗣️A good article and another PSA on why translating effect sizes into years or days of learning is a bad idea (in most cases). tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

@wesbonifay I’m not really in any sort of position to critique this paper and I know that philosophy can fruitfully investigate all sorts of questions that on their face sound absurd. But I also had to make this

@wesbonifay I’m three paragraphs in and have already had to google one word with no apparent definition or use beyond the paper

Not sure who is still on here but new article day! Follow the link for updated benchmarks for grade 3-8 annual growth and an investigation of what drives the considerable variability in growth across different scales. doi.org/10.1080/193457…

@wesbonifay Was trying to recall how I became aware of Stoner, then somehow remembered that it was this tweet. Pretty much the worst beach book imaginable, but I really loved it. Thank you!
