@AmyLaskyMD I think it’s both? My rotation schedule and easy pregnancy made working until 39 weeks doable and I enjoyed it for the most part. I don’t think it should be mandatory, however, and I am dreading going back at 6 weeks.

I used to think it was badass that some docs operated and delivered babies until 39 or 40 weeks and now I think this is unbelievably awful and the system is beyond horrible at supporting pregnant and postpartum physicians & their families

In the meantime, I will be enjoying some baby snuggles. Thanks to those who sent positive thoughts, we are both doing well!

Wow, apparently thanking my program and those who supported me the past 9 months did NOT go over well. I was fortunate to have an uncomplicated pregnancy and felt empowered to leave early/ not operate if I wasn’t feeling well.

While positive changes have been made recently, I agree that the current parental leave policies set by the American Board of Surgery are not enough. If anyone starts a petition to increase parental leave for surgery residents, I will be the first to sign.

This is especially important given the recent studies published showing increased risks for pregnant surgeons. Any MS4 considering having a family in residency should think about how well the institution you train at will support you.
