Metro regulator approves increasing speeds on the Red Line. Much of the Red Line outside downtown is built for 65-75 mph operation. But WMATA limited speed to 59 mph since 1986. With computer guidance and automatic door operation, this could cut 7 minutes off Red line runs.

@ArmandDoma @ezraklein Obviously the construction process itself was much faster than today, which does show how we’ve “lost it” in terms of being a country that builds things, but the idea that “oh it only took them 4 years to do X” isn’t really true since they had so many false starts and failures.

@ArmandDoma @ezraklein The one thing I’ll say is that this is functionally wrong, New York gave a charter to a company to build the subway in 1872, and it took them 30 years to figure out the myriad system of financing the line, where and how to construct it , and identifying an operator.
