@DeseretStone My brother passed away unexpectedly while I was serving my mission. I took one full day “off” and grieved and the next day I was back to work. Not because I was told that’s what I had to do, but I chose to. And I relate to that bishop. Doing the work and serving saved me too.

I once had a Bishop who lost a child in truly tragic circumstances while serving in the calling. It was an awful blow. Naturally, the ward was asked to give him space, and obviously did so. The general assumption was that he would be released to give him time to grieve and recover. Less than a month later, he was back in the role, working just as hard or harder than before. Years later he shared with me that his calling as bishop (and, of course, his testimony) had probably saved his life. It kept him from collapsing into himself in despair and grief and pity. Focusing on helping others was the only thing that could save him. His experience, of course, won’t be universal. But people grieve—and cope—in a lot of different ways than one might expect. And life has to carry on somehow. I hope Erika is well.
