ADVOCATE -SUPREME COURT OF INDIA

“Iss baar Eid nahi manegi. Iss baar bakre nahi katenge, iss baar saare mulle katenge.” Following the Tarun murder case, several hate-filled videos targeting Muslims have begun circulating widely on social media. In one such viral clip, a young boy can be heard making inflammatory remarks, saying, “This time there will be no Eid, no goats will be slaughtered — this time all the mullahs will be slaughtered.” He further alleges that police receive weekly payments from Muslims and threatens violence, adding, “If any mullah is seen, we will cut him immediately.” He also calls for throwing pigs and pig-related items during Eid celebrations, while the crowd around him can be heard cheering and encouraging the remarks.

A catastrophic day for democracy. The Supreme Court’s handling of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam’s bail plea is nothing short of brutal. By rejecting his plea and effectively locking him out of the possibility of bail for the next year, the court has sanctioned prolonged punishment without trial. This is institutional cruelty.
