Successful Trail Rescue above Parma Park
On Saturday, March 8 around 4:00 pm, our team responded to a report of a paragliding incident in Parma Park, Santa Barbara. A 56-year-old female experienced a hard landing, sustaining moderate injuries.
A fellow paraglider landed to assist and provide immediate help, but the exact location was challenging to pinpoint from the ground due to the rugged terrain.
@SBCFireInfo quickly deployed our UAS (drone) team. The drone located the patient rapidly, used its loudspeaker to reassure her and the witness ("Rescue teams are en route—stay where you are!"), and hovered overhead to serve as a visual beacon, guiding ground crews directly to the scene.
With excellent coordination from our partners at @SBCityFirePIO and other responding agencies, firefighters reached the patient safely. She was evaluated on scene and transported by ground ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital ER for further treatment.
This incident highlights how technology like drones, combined with skilled teamwork from dispatchers, firefighters, and partners, makes a real difference in getting help to people quickly and safely—especially in hard-to-reach areas.
A huge thank you to our drone operators, first responders, and the good Samaritan who stayed with her until help arrived. Your actions mattered!
To everyone enjoying Santa Barbara's beautiful trails and skies: Fly and hike smart—check conditions, carry a charged phone with GPS apps, and know your limits. Safety first!
If you're out there and see something, call 911 immediately.
