@BrandonRahbar Also leads the league in “during FT discussions” with refs, “during timeout discussions” with refs, “during live play discussions” with refs. I’ll never forget being at Game 2 of WCF last year and watching him work the officials. How many ways can you say the same thing?

@ELITEORNOT1 @HPbasketball And SGA is obv a tough cover. Even OKC gets called for frustrating fouls against Luka, Brunson, Harden, etc. guys who are aggressive attackers and have all the tricks are just frustrating to guard.

@ELITEORNOT1 @HPbasketball Good call- my tweet is over simplifying it. There’s a curve to it. Teams can’t just decide the nights they play the Thunder that they’re gonna copy them. Gotta earn the rep and build the elite defensive culture and skill. Can’t just try it against OKC.

@3Powders @garrett______1 @HPbasketball I agree with this. I would add that OKC earned the rep by having a team full of great defenders. High level- this is a blueprint that could be replicated, but having 5-6 all NBA caliber defenders is easier said than done, obviously.

@garrett______1 @HPbasketball @sbean0012 There’s a couple explanations, both come down to human bias. One is the fact that Okc has a reputation as a great defensive team and individuals have reputations as great defensive players. The other is the fact that refs can’t/won’t call everything.

@ELITEORNOT1 @HPbasketball Then why doesn’t everyone just do that?OKC has shown that apparently if you just defend super aggressively all game, the refs will allow it.

@sbean0012 @HPbasketball When your fouling non stop all game every game the refs just get use to the players playing that way. Dort and Caruso get away with fouls like draymond does. Its absolutely insane

@garrett______1 @HPbasketball This is a reasonable explanation to me, and in line with how I see it. Assembling that kind of defensive talent on one team is not easy, nor is building a defensive culture. Identity/reputation likely play into it with officials, similarly to good offensive players.

@HPbasketball @sbean0012 “Other teams aren’t allowed to play like that.” No, other teams *cannot* play like that because they don’t have the personnel or cohesion to bring that level of defensive execution in every meaningful game.

@garrett______1 @HPbasketball I’m biased, so I don’t typically share my opinion. But imo it’s either the league is rigged for OKC (not likely), or OKC has a roster full of all defensive players who live to play that end of the floor, and are skilled at not fouling or not getting caught fouling.

@HPbasketball @sbean0012 If there’s no reasonable explanation for something, then usually there is nothing to that particular thing. “OKC gets officiated differently” is just league-wide cope for being inferior to the best team defense in the league. It’s tired and lazy.

@sbean0012 I don't think it's a league thing. I don't have an explanation for it, just like I don't have an explanation for why the Lakers have the highest free throw rate in the league over every time span over the last five years

@_JasonLT A vintage performance. Steph and Dray doing what they’ve done so well their whole careers. As they get into the late stages of their careers, you gotta appreciate these ones.

I don’t care what happens on Friday or in an eventual first round series. What a cool “heart of a champion” type of win from the Warriors. Those dudes are absolute legends.

Yo @utahjazz , where you tanked this year and won’t be sending us that first rounder, we’d appreciate you knocking off the Lakers tonight so we don’t have to play both the Nuggets and Spurs back to back. Draft odds are overrated- it’s rigged anyway, as you know #ThunderUp

@jamesmerilatt It’s more telling that the Nuggets don’t want the 3 seed, imo. Ofc the Thunder would rather play 1 of SA/DEN than both. They want the easiest path possible. DEN is playing both SAS & OKC either way. Risking home court to avoid Minnesota is more telling to me.

The Thunder are ducking the Nuggets. Tells you all you need to know about the West. Despite being the No. 3 seed, it rolls through Denver.

@Rylan_Stiles Both paths go through Spurs and Thunder. I agree that HOU is a better matchup, but they’re risking losing homecourt. Better to have homecourt vs MIN or lose homecourt against HOU? I don’t think I’d risk losing homecourt.

@HPbasketball As a Thunder fan, I think it comes down to playoff performance. 3 point shooting has dipped the past couple of years in the playoffs. SGA efficiency has dipped a bit in the playoffs. This has made the Thunder look vulnerable. That being said, winning 🏆 s will trump optics.

I'm really interested by the idea that the Thunder are, objectively, an All-Time team. Wins. Point Differential. Defense. Defense with Offensive Capability. Led by MVP. Depth. Coaching. Culture. Execution. But they do not feel like the all-time great teams *to me* and I do not know why. (Thunder fans, I get they fell like that to you and that people SHOULD view them that way. Read the first part again.) If you're not a Thunder fan, does OKC feel like an all-time great team on par with Warriors 2016, 2017, or say, Heat 2012 (who were objectively much worse than OKC), OKC 2014, 01 Lakers, etc? If not, why not?

I should clarify that their youth/inexperience is still a factor, I just think they’re so damn good that it would be foolish to count them out because of it.

@HoopFocusX Exactly. The “OKC is officiated differently” argument infers that the fix is in from the league for OKC, which means the NBA is cooked. Reality is that it’s hard to assemble a team with multiple All NBA defenders (Dort, Caso-lock this year, Caruso, Chet, Dub) who D up for 48

Every team in the league gets to play extremely physical if they establish it throughout the game OKC just does it every game because they’re locked in for all 82 games

@JordanMcninch @HPbasketball Almost exactly one year ago, LA smacked OKC in OKC and then lost the next game to OKC in a game that was close till Luka got ejected. Lotta people said LA was peaking and that OKC didn’t want to see them in the playoffs. I’m predicting an overreaction one way or another.

I would say that the even tiny tiny bit you are conceding would not be shared by the rest of your media peers, which is where perceptions are created. I would, with confidence, say that if the lakers get blown out (likely), the discourse tomorrow will be that they have been on a fluke heater (maybe true) And if the thunder lose, it will be that they are still the same overwhelming favorite and “I’ll still pick the wolves/nuggets over LA in the first round but not the rockets because chemistry herp derp” Which is EXACTLY the perception of both team right now. So, it may or may not matter to you a tiny bit. To everyone else, the commentary will be the same!

Yeah I think this game matters for OKC. If they enter the playoffs with San Antonio having won the season series and the Lakers having won the only matchup with whatever THIS version of LA is, I think that matters a tiny, tiny bit.
JM_SippinOnSports@JordanMcninch

@HPbasketball If the lakers win an 8 point game and both teams shoot 33% from 3 would it change YOUR stance as an analyst Matt. I’m genuinely asking. This is not sarcastic, or rhetorical.
