@sbulka @brandonpiller1 @jackrichrdson We tried that with DeBrincat and Chychrun. Didn’t work out so well. Not saying it can’t happen in the future, but this is the cycle we’re in now. Gotta win like this, and think they can. Maybe not the Cup yet, but a round or maybe 2

I think the answer is obvious. Staios has been interested in Robertson, Weegar, Anderson, Kyrou, etc. Big names that reportedly did not want to waive to come here. If Ersson or Burakovsky were UFAs, no guarantee they’d pick Ottawa, even if they didn’t have a lineup of suitors.
Graeme Nichols@GraemeNichols

What I don't really understand about the Ersson and Burakovsky deals is that, if you like the players, okay. But, why the rush and urge to trade assets when they did instead of waiting until after qualifying offers were due or on July 1st? What was the rush?

@brandonpiller1 @jackrichrdson CAR was in the same spot not too long ago. Heck, look at NSH. No income tax state and aren’t on any one of these recent disclosed short lists. OTT’s just not a destination right now. Minimal success and still shaking off its bad reputation. That can change with winning.

Still holding out hope a deal can be done with Claude Giroux. Losing 2/3 of your Captains in one summer would not be Best in Class™️

@GraemeNichols The other thing is that new contracts are exceeding the pace of increase to the cap. As a result, teams will have very top heavy salary structures, which means you absolutely cannot pay a fourth liner $5.5 million.

It would be unconscionable if they don’t sign Giroux because of $$ while allocating $5.5m to burkovsky. Would have preferred Gallagher at 2.5m. And the Ersson thing makes even less sense now. Not losing sleep over a late round pick but why trade for someone you could have for free.

I’m thinking they really wanted the single year in Burakovsky as opposed to a multi-year free agent. Staios said he was in on the bigger name players, but the price wasn’t right. I’m betting they still want that player but may need to delay it until the deadline/next summer.

Lee would be a nice fit. Good vet, too, despite that being a common trope. Only concern is the contract and his boots not being overly quick, but I’ll take the trade-off for his net-front presence.
Tyler@politicstcan

Anders Lee is huge, does all the things Brady did on puck that made him work well in our top six, and does one notable thing as good as anyone in the league...deflects pucks in front. For Ottawa's volumetric offence and how much gets driven from cycles, he could be a great fit.

@EverydaySens That would be a very expensive bottom 6 add. I still don't get where everyone fits as it stands without adding another mid player

@jkamckenzie @TheAthleticNHL Still don’t understand why Staois traded for Burakovsky with a cap hit of 5,5 million? So frustrating!

A fascinating press conference from Steve Staios. He explained why the Sens acquired Andre Burakovsky and Samuel Ersson. He also spoke about the challenge of adding to his group through trade. Now, who else could the #Sens target? @TheAthleticNHL nytimes.com/athletic/74011…

@SOne247 @ComingInHotSens Exactly. Not necessarily a horrible player for 4th line but malpractice to voluntarily commit 5.5m of cap space for a player like this.

@ComingInHotSens 5M for a depth guy that we hope we can squeeze more out of? Terrible choice, we just finished with Perron

@SensCentral Fair summary. With all the complaints from fans, no one is mentioning that it took 2 1st rounders to get Peterka/McTavish; Staios feels price is too high; I agree with him. Also, free agent pool is crap,so yes, a gamble with Burokoski, but nothing like the Stepan Dorion disaster

@SensCentral I am genuinely curious as to why you would say that. You guys put in so much work on your draft rankings and do a great job. The team takes a player that doesn’t even rank in your top 75 and that is good?

Reading the tea leaves from Steve Staios, I wonder if this could be a potential lineup. Eklund - Stützle - Batherson Foegele - Cozens - Zetterlund Giroux - Pinto - Amadio Cousins - Greig - Burakovsky

@jackrichrdson True but virtually every team in the conference improved, some significantly. Ottawa is significantly worse. Will depend on free agency and wasting money on another washed up veteran is not going to help.

@dougschaefer @SunGarrioch This team is in the middle of its prime. Barely sneaking into the playoffs twice is not the goal. Virtually every team in the conference has gotten better, some significantly. We are significantly worse.
