I'll delete this in a moment or two, but feel obliged to note that I just read the blurb of a new book that brings together "two modes of writing, the academic and the autobiographical, for the first time".

This is probably true also for colonial Latin American jobs like mine. And also true for most early modernists. And if you are a specialists of Ancient or Medieval history, then forget about it. Basically all pre- modern fields are screwed. It’s horrible.
Jonathan B. Field (he/him)@ThatJBF

It is kind of wild to think that if you are a tenured or tenure-track early American lit prof, you are almost certainly the last person who will have that job in the history of your institution.

Great piece by Richard Ovenden on the attack on the BL, ongoing efforts to restore services and the abject failure of government to provide necessary support. standard.co.uk/comment/britis…

Deeply saddened to hear of the death of Natalie Zemon Davis (1928-2023). A brilliant, warm, inspiring teacher, a person of astonishing generosity and integrity, and one of the greatest historians of our time. May her memory be a blessing.

@scaliger I was always (and in retrospect rather foolishly) put off by the Woolf jibe about opening champagne with a corkscrew, but I'm now 120pp. in and think it's excellent. (Can't work out how/why he's so spare in some places and so v nearly verbose in others, but so I suppose it goes.)
