Many Man United fans believe that buying 3 Midfielders in one season is unrealistic. Well, this was Liverpool before they won the title last season. They had a near total midfield turnover but, pay attention to how 1) resources were allocated 2) they achieved midfield synergy.

@utdrobbo You are of course entitled to your own opinion but I’m certain that we’ll agree that some of our best recruits in the past few years have come in the shape of what I described. Lammens, Dorgu and Heaven come to mind.

@scarletreport Not at this club at this stage of the process, it's not. We are absolutely not in the right state to be doing that.

With Sansoni in charge embedding data analytics into recruitment, I have a feeling that we won’t go for Anderson, Baleba or Wharton this summer.

For every Michael Carrick there is a Parker, a Drinkwater, a Schneiderlin, a Barkley, a Rodwell. Buying an in-form midfielder from another EPL team (especially considering the £££) doesn’t guarantee the slam dunk many people think it would. This should be handled with care.

@utdrobbo They are very good players, don’t get me wrong, but the whole point of using data IMO is to reveal overlooked targets that could eventually have an even bigger impact than the obvious ones.

@scarletreport But that's why all roads lead to Anderson/Wharton with Baleba's historical data & traits bringing him into contention.

@utdrobbo I agree. Data in the funneling process, followed with more thorough in-person scouting is a well balanced recruitment strategy.

@scarletreport Data is best used as a funnel before applying "old school" methodology to pick the ones you want i.e. background checks, in-person scouting, etc. I think the previous summer would be your best blend of "proven" players who put up impressive underlying numbers.

@scarletreport I agree. Heavens and Dorgu were good signings. Not sure Lammens was purely data driven. I want to see more of these signings. Every window, I want to see 2/3 20-30m signings who can turn into great players. That’s where data can work the best.

@SullyTalkz Absolutely. Using exploratory data analysis, the club can identify underrated targets that could be followed closely. Data is key in the funneling process but a wide range of factors will be decisive in the decision making process. Nice to see you around here btw. 👍

@scarletreport Always remember that data will guide transfers and underpin recruitment strategy rather than dictating it. Having said that, I've heard positive discussions internally on the three names you mentioned so it will all really depend on the direction we decide to end up going.

@scarletreport Which signing last summer felt like a data driven signing for kind of an unknown player? Lammens probably. But, our goalkeeping scout had been following Lammens for a long time.
